Description

French Level B1 – Course Goals

By the end of this course, participants will be able to use French confidently in everyday, travel, and professional situations.

Everyday Social Skills

  • Perform and respond to a wide range of common language functions using polite, neutral expressions.

Listening

  • Understand the main points of clear, standard French on familiar topics encountered at work, school, or leisure, including short narratives.

Reading

  • Read straightforward factual texts related to personal interests or professional fields.

  • Extract relevant information from everyday materials such as letters, brochures, and short official documents.

  • Recognise key points in simple newspaper articles on familiar subjects.

Speaking & Interaction

  • Communicate in most everyday situations, including travel or routine exchanges.

  • Initiate, maintain, and close simple face-to-face conversations on familiar topics or personal interests.

Speaking & Presenting

  • Give clear, structured descriptions of familiar subjects or events.

  • Relate details of unexpected occurrences, such as accidents, and briefly explain opinions, plans, or actions.

  • Deliver prepared presentations on familiar topics, answer follow-up questions, and ask for repetition if needed.

Writing & Interaction

  • Write personal letters and notes to request or convey simple, relevant information.

Writing & Production

  • Produce connected texts on familiar subjects by linking short sentences into coherent sequences.

 

Marie has been teaching French at all levels at Languages Unlimited, Manor House School, Alliance Française in Dublin, and as a private language tutor since 2010 in parallel to her career as a translator, interpreter and French technical writer.

Marie has a Masters Degree in Translation and literary studies with a specialisation in French linguistics and grammar. She also has a Masters in FLE (Teaching French as a foreign language).

Marie had taught French in organisations such as Orange Ltd, Amundi Asset Management, Société Générale, in person and online. She has prepared students to the junior and leaving certificate examinations in public and private schools. As a translator, she translates novels and books for Irish and Swedish publishing houses (Four Courts Press, Saga Edmont), and literary material for the Alliance Française. As an interpreter, she has worked for the European Commission, Four Courts and UN Women.
